Chastity
(iḥṣān, taʿaffuf, ʿiffa)

---

Chastity is used here to denote several inter-related Qurʾānic concepts with regard to the protection of private parts and interpersonal conduct between men and women. The Qurʾānic terms for these concepts are primarily derived from three roots: ḥ-ṣ-n, ʿ-f-f, and ʿ-ṣ-m. In addition, seven verses use the word farj (female’s private part) with qualifiers to denote its guarding and protection. Furthermore, other verses highlight these teachings by contrasting the virtues of chaste men and women with those who are their opposites and who are defined with antonyms such as musāfiḥūn (fem. musāfiḥāt), imrā sawʾ, zānin (fem. zāniya), khabīth (fem. khabītha) and baghī.
