Zayd b. Ḥāritha

Muzaffar Iqbal

Zayd b. Ḥāritha, the adopted son of the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, the third person to accept Islam, and the only Companion mentioned in the Qurʾān by name in a verse that annulled Jahiliya practice of impermissibility of marrying the divorced wives of their adopted sons: And when you said to him whom Allah has blessed and whom you have blessed, “Retain your wife for yourself and reverence Allah,” you were hiding in yourself that which Allah was to disclose; and you feared people, though Allah has more right to be feared by you. Then when Zayd relinquished his claim upon her, We wed her to you, so that there should be no restriction for the believers in respect to the wives of their adopted sons when the latter have relinquished their claims upon them. And the Command of Allah shall be fulfilled (Q 33:37).
